Oak Valley Ski Resort is 3 minutes away from the Seo-Wonju IC of Yeongdong Expressway, and it takes about an hour to get to the resort from Gangnam station by car.

The resort has 7 slopes consisting of 1 beginner, 4 intermediate, and 2 advanced courses. Beginner slopes of the slopes are gentle, making it a popular ski resort for beginners. However, it is unfortunate that only 3 courses out of 7 slopes are being operated at the moment (in December 2021). I hope they open all the slopes soon.

Additionally, they are running a sled slope for kids which is next to the condominium, and a smelt fishing experience.

If you are looking for a nearby attraction, I strongly recommend the Museum SAN. It’s a museum designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando and became the most famous must-visit place in Wonju.

Pyeongchang Phoenix Ski Resort MontBlanc Peak
[ Phoenix Pyeongchang Ski Resort MontBlanc Peak ]

Do you remember the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games? 6 slopes of Phoenix Pyeongchang Ski Resort were used for the Pyeongchang Olympic freestyle ski & snowboard games.

Phoenix Pyeongchang is the ski resort I visited the most because my brother has a vacation cottage near the resort. If you are an intermediate skier and snowboarder, Phoenix Pyeongchang could be your best choice in many ways.

There are 21 slopes, 8 lifts, gondola, 2.4km-long beginner course (Panorama), and Extreme Park with an Olympic-standard halfpipe for snowboarders.

The resort is a leisure complex with golf courses, waterpark (Blue Canyon), and Snow Village (sled slope and snow playground for kids).

There are many other attractions in Pyeongchang area, such as Herbnara, Sky Ranch (Haneul Mokjang), Woljeongsa temple, etc. And you can get to the Gangneung beach in an hour.

Tip: Phoenix Pyeonchang provides a 2 hour free ski lesson for hotel and condominium gusts during the 2021/2022 season.

Alpensia ski resort

Alpensia Ski Resort Nightview
[ Alpensia Ski Resort Nightview – Source: Homepage]

Alpensia Ski Resort was one of the main venues of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics 2018. I guess some people might remember the ski jumping game of the Olympics that was held in Alpensia resort.

The name Alpensia came from the Alps and Asia. It is located in Daegwallyeong and is very close to the Yong Pyong Ski Resort which is the most famous ski resort in Korea. It is owned by Gangwon-do Development Corporation, a local public corporation in Gangwon-do.

It is a little far from Seoul at a total of 2 hours of distance. But it is definitely worth visiting. From Alpha to Foxtrot, the resort has 6 great ski & snowboarding slopes and a sledding slope.

Furthermore, you could visit Odaesan National Park to enjoy the beautiful Woljeongsa Fir Forest Trails. It gives you magnificent white coverage with snowflakes. It’s 18km far away from the ski resort taking 20minutes by car.

Yong Pyong Ski Resort

Yongpyong Ski Resort
[ Yong Pyong Ski Resort – Source: Homepage ]

Korea’s largest ski resort Yong Pyong Ski Resort was also one of the main venues in the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics Games. It has a total of 28 slopes, 14 cable lifts, and a gondola for every group to enjoy. Needless to say, it’s the best ski resort in Korea.

After a scene from Korea’s famous TV series “The Legend of the Blue Sea” was shot in Yong Pyong Resort, the resort gained more popularity among the younger generations.

You can reach Yong Pyong resort in Hoenggye from Seoul in around 2 hours. The distance may be a little much, but the winter experience of skiing with 28 slopes in the resort makes it all worth it. Believe me. You won’t regret visiting this awesome resort.

Eden Valley Ski Resort

Eden Valley Ski Resort is located in Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-so, and officially opened in 2008. It is the only ski resort in Gyeongsan-do, and it’s the southernmost ski resort in Korea.

They turned the Saturn ski slope to a luge track in Edenvalley Luge Track in 2018. And many people visit the resort to enjoy the 2.4km world’s longest louge slope.

Due to the warm weather in the south, the opening period is very short. I recommend you check the opening dates and hours before you go.

snow in korea

Winter Weather and Snow in Korea

Although all four seasons in Korea are very enjoyable for different reasons for a tourist, winter in Korea is something special. If you’re a person who loves winters and snow, then Korea should definitely be on your list of places to visit in the cold period.

The snowfall happens in Seoul in the month of December, January, and February. If you plan your trip for the winter, try going in late November or December. Because that’s when the city gets blessed with snowfalls and showers of a snowflake.

Seoul is one of those cities which can get extremely bone-chilling cold with cold breezes blowing with a light ray of sunshine and cloudy sky. The water of the rivers also freezes when the temperature drops below the freezing point.

The cold season hits different areas of Korea with various lower temperatures starting from late November and lasting till early March. The temperature remains from -3 to -6 but can even drop down to -10 at times. Winters in Korea are windy and dry but that shouldn’t stop you from having a good time.  If you want to know more about the weather, temperature, and precipitation, read Korea weather & temperature post.

Visiting Seoul just in time to see it transformed into a wonderful winter land is going to take proper planning and booking your tickets earlier in the year. Discover here for more interesting things to do in winter in Seoul.

  1. Hello.
Thank you for the useful information. It helps me a lot to make a plan for my first travel to South Korea.
Where is the nearest ski resort from Pyeongchang station?
    Is it close?

    Thanks
    Pimnicha

    1. Hi Pimnicha,

Thanks and sounds great that we can help you! 🙂
The nearest ski resort from the Pyeongchang station and bus terminal is Pyeongchang Phoenix.
It takes 15 minutes to get to the resort from the station by car (taxi). The fare might be around 17,000 KRW.
Have a great time in Pyeongchang!

      Cheers,
      Dy & Jay
