🏘️ Gamcheon Culture Village History

Gamcheon Culture Village History
The history of Gamcheon Culture Village is pretty fascinating.

It may come as a surprise, but Gamcheon Culture Village was once a slum. After the Korean War, around 800 families settled in the village in 1955, contributing to its history of being a slum town for refugees. However, Gamcheon’s origin dates back earlier in the 1900s when members of Taegeukdo, an ascetic religious community, were already residing. After the refugees settled there, they built houses piled on top of each other on the hillside. This multi-tiered communal layout was actually meticulously planned to ensure that no house blocks any house behind it. This also adhered to the Taegeukdo teaching of allowing others to prosper.

Starting from 2009, the Gamcheon had an artistic makeover. Artists and art students decorated and added colorful touches to the houses, walls, and throughout the town. The result is what you see today: murals, sculptures, paintings, and art installations in every alley and house of the village. These artistic features make the Gamcheon village one of the most Instagrammable spots in Busan. Once a slum town, this place is now known as “Korea’s Machu Picchu” and “Korea’s Santorini.”
