The origin of the Seoul Museum of Art dates back over thirty years. It was initially launched in the Gyeonghuigung Palace area on August 19, 1988. The original museum only had six exhibition rooms and an outdoor sculpture park. Fast forward fourteen years, SeMA shifted to its current location behind Deoksugung Palace. It is in an old Korean Supreme Court building and features three floors of exhibition halls, a basement with lecture halls, a connected administration annex, offices, and classrooms.

SeMA’s mission is to be a network museum that users, mediators, and producers strive to build together. As such, its temporary and permanent exhibitions address various facets of history, culture, art, and lifestyle. The museum also offers free public art classes in Korean traditional arts, lectures, and docent programs in English and Korean to further its mission. If you are thinking of visiting SeMA, arrive during its operating hours:

• Tuesday-Friday (Weekdays): 10 AM – 8 PM
• Weekends & Public Holidays: March-October (Summer): 10 AM – 7 PM, November-February (Winter): 10 AM – 6 PM

Seoul Museum of Art Seosomun Main Branch

This is the main branch of SeMA, which shifted to the center of Jeong-dong in 2002. Initially, Korea’s first courthouse, Pyeongniwon, stood in the location of the museum. SeMA’s first and largest branch, the Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, opened to the public in 2013. It facilitates the communication between humans, nature, and art. Photo SeMA is a space dedicated to photography and exploring its artistic value and cultural impact. It is Korea’s only public art museum dedicated to photography. Finally, SeMA Nam June Paik Memorial House honors and commemorates the artist Nam June Paik. It is located on the Paik’s former house, where he spent his childhood from 1937 to 1950. The memorial restores the original single-story traditional Korean hanok house, offering visitors a chance to glimpse into Paik’s early life.
